Do you start with the question you are trying to answer before determining the most useful HR metrics? Starting with the question helps determine the metric(s) to best answer that question. This 16-page SAP paper includes 100 questions across 9 categories that can spark ideas. A few categories include: recruiting, onboarding, employee experience, internal mobility, career development, etc. While insights gained from individual metrics are useful, they can be even more powerful when combined into a narrative. To help with this, I am also sharing The Conference Board’s report Telling the Human Capital Management Story, which includes ideas for communicating and tailoring the messages of a human capital narrative to 7 different stakeholder groups. Page 19 shows the parts of the HC narrative in which the 7 stakeholders are most likely interested.
